Though a small firm, we have undertaken projects have taken us places including New Delhi, Lucknow, Bhubaneswar, Shantiniketan, Hazaribag, Shillong and Cherrapunjee. In this section, we intend sharing with you some of our experiences while on those sojourns.
software and website projects have been undertaken at Ramakrishna Mission, Cherapunjee . . .
Cherrapunjee, the abode of clouds, is noted all over the world for highest recorded rainfall. Here clouds billow upwards from down the gorges and spreading over the sky for imminent downpour. Here it rains cats and dogs with such tremendous gust of wind which may be incredible to one who has no personal experience. Here one may find varieties of cloud formations and quick change of weather fair to foul and vice versa. Here are the undulated ranges of East Khasi Hills draped in the velvet of lush green grasses. Situated on the summit of the southern ranges of Khasi hills and located at nearly 4,500 feet above sea-level over looking vast plains of Sylhet district of present Bangladesh, Cherrapunjee receives full brunt of monsoon directly from the Bay of Bengal coming across the vast plains of present Bangladesh, annual rainfall averaging to 4900 mm per year. Mawsynram, another place noted for heavy rainfall, is situated about 8 km to the west by aerial distance.
Beautifully adorned by many seasonal falls and some noted perennial falls like Nohkalikai (3 k.m. away from Cherrapunjee), Mawsmai (9 k.m. away from Cherrapunjee), Kynrem ( 18 k.m. away from Cherrapunjee), Dian Thlen and Umstew. Cherrapunjee has a few fascinating stone gorges noted among which are Riat-Maw-Iew, Maw-Laikhlieh and Riat-U-Shain. The famous Mawsmai Cave with charming stalactite formations is located close to the Mawsmai falls. We visited the caves at Mawmluh about half a km west of Cherrapunji, adjacent to the small hamlet of Mawmluh. The caves have been formed by a five-river crossing with impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations. The caves are supposed to be the 4th longest in the Indian sub continent.
At clear nights the illumined towns of Sylhet, Sunamganj and Chhatak of Bangladesh are sights of attraction from the height of Cherrapunjee. Delicious banana with charming fragrance and orange honey grown in the vicinity of Cherrapunjee are well known in the country.
We found an impressive saga tucked away in the pages of history of the land. The Cherra Companygunj State Railway was a contemporary to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) and operated over gurgling streams and through thick forests, for at least 10 years. Passengers and goods were ferried to and fro between Tharia a sleepy hamlet near Cherrapunjee and Companyganj (now in Bangladesh). The railway was destroyed in the Earthquake of 1897.
